What should a baby wear to bed?

There are so many questions around what a baby should wear to bed, one of the most popular options is baby sleepsuits. However, other great choices are bodysuits and rompersuits. There’s also non-clothing items to consider for extra warmth and insulation, such as sleeping bags and blankets.

If you’re wondering what to dress a newborn in at night, it really depends on the time of year and the temperature of your location.

The room temperature will give you the best guide on what to dress your toddler in at night. Shop our younger boys and girls pyjamas today, including fun designs featuring their favourite characters - from Star Wars to Marvel and Disney.

How many layers should a baby wear?

• Layers in the winter during the day are fine, yet it’s best to avoid adding too many layers to your baby at night. It all depends on the temperature in the room.
• A popular rule that people go off is adding one extra layer to the amount you are wearing, this is a good rule to follow for outside during the day.

How many sleepsuits does a newborn need?

We recommend 4 or 5 sleepsuits as your baby outgrows them very quickly, however you may want enough to rotate for every night. Multipacks offer great value for money, and designs can be plain or patterned. Gap’s Brannan Bear mascot can be seen on our baby sleepsuits on prints or featured as a cute teddy embroidered emblem.

Baby sleepwear top tips

• Lightweight blankets are versatile in use, with baby sleeping bags being a good choice in bed at night
• Sleepsuits with zip or popper fastenings can be convenient for quick changes during the night
• Dressing feet first is the easiest when getting your baby ready for bed
• Choose breathable fabrics and soft cottons
• Always consider the room temperature and ensure baby will not overheat

Sleeping bags vs blankets

Blankets are great for multiple uses, during the day as well as at night. Even in a pram out and about on a walk with your baby. During the night a lightweight blanket can be a great option for the warmer weather to avoid overheating.
Baby sleeping bags are often the warmest option that can have the highest tog for colder weather. Baby sleeping bags are used for children under 24 months.
