Originally named the khaki, Gap’s chinos have been influenced by prep, street and skate-wear - making them truly iconic. The first iteration of khakis was Wheat Jeans, a denim dyed the colour of wheat.
In 1998, Gap released ‘Khaki Swing’, an advert that combined rhythm with a new khaki energy. From the Modern Straight to throwback fits, all chinos are forever timeless.
Four years after opening the brand’s first denim and record store, in 1973 Gap launched its own private denim label. We’ve been making iconic jeans ever since.
Our jeans are both nostalgic and now. Today, 100% of Gap’s denim is made responsibly using our water-saving Washwell programme.
Launched at Christmas 1984, the Perfect Tee, with 12 colour options, became an instant icon. To date, our tees have been produced in over 250 colourways and have been worn by Gap Individuals Kim Basinger, Naomi Campbell (twice), Chris Evans, Melissa King and Angus Cloud. Gap’s Pocket Tee was worn on Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future in 1985.
Gap sells its first Gap branded denim jacket in 1994. All denim jackets previously sold in Gap stores were Levi’s. The denim jacket has featured in Gap’s TV and print commercials many times throughout the decades, celebrating Gap’s rich denim heritage.
Today, our denim jackets continue to be reinvented with new proportions, and all Gap denim is now made using our Washwell programme. So far, our global water-saving initiative has saved over 500 million litres of water since 2016.
The Arch Logo Hoodie made its debut in Gap’s 1995 autumn campaign ‘Nothing Else Like It’, shot by the legendary Patrick Demarchelier.
Since then, the hoodie has gone prep, stayed classic, and has been adopted by the next generation of culture shapers. Gen-Z has bubbled it up, made it TikTok famous, and it’s even been reimagined by icon Dapper Dan – whose individual spin on the Gap logo hoodie sold out in hours.
